Mary Lloyd Jones is a well-established and respected Welsh artist having exhibited widely nationally and internationally since the 1960s. She has works in many private and public collections.
Mid Wales Arts has been working with Mary Lloyd Jones and her family to create a special exhibition to celebrate her 90th year, selecting a range of work produced over many years that demonstrates her ability to use language and symbols to convey her passion for Welsh Culture.
Of her work she writes "My aim is that my work should reflect my identity, my relationship with the land, an awareness of history and the treasure of our literary and oral traditions. I search for devices that will enable me to create multilayered works. This has led to my involvement with the beginnings of language, early man made marks and the Ogham and Bardic alphabet".
Heulwen Wright
“I hope my work conjures a nostalgia, and my use of fragments of text that represent fragments of moments in time evoke a sense of familiarity. The inspiration behind this work includes our memories of our homelands, the invisible threads that link us with our ancestors, the respect for the land and the stories of old that are passed down as a rite of passage. It is a feeling of longing, and a connection felt but not spoken, it is 'Hiraeth' and all it encompasses”.
Jean Sampson
"My current practice draws on years of making experience and a more recent fascination porcelain. My primary tool is the potter’s wheel. I enjoy the processes necessary to using clay in its wet state, where it is malleable and can be flattened, stretched, twisted and pulled, and in its leather hard state when it can be trimmed, turned, cut and joined with precision."
